Taylen was busy working on a new element recombination when noise in the foyer grabbed her attention. Ducking down, she peeked through the lab door to the office, watching for anyone to come into view. Thankfully, she had remembered to leave the lights on or off the same as she had found them when she arrived. Her heart raced when she noticed Hastings crossing the main floor, moving rapidly toward Emmers suite of office space on the far side.

She moved quickly to douse the burner she’d been using, tucking the beaker into a hot pocket and shoving it into the fridge below. The rest of what was out was too unstable to stash quickly. She absently wished she’d thought about it before she’d spread so many things across the counter. Too late now. She set as much to normal-ish looking as she could before moving to the far corner, forcing herself to breathe and slow her heart down. She needed to distill to vapor again, but her pulse was doing a mustang across the open range impersonation and she was having a hard time getting herself under control.

The chances he’d come to her lab were unknown, but she knew she could not be here if he did. She forced herself to breathe in and hold it for a ten count before breathing it out for the same measure. Repeating it, she didn’t have a chance for a three-peat. Noise in the outer office forced her hand. She had to hope that she managed as she sent every bit of will to her center to change states.

The door to the lab flew open as she watched from the corner, where she was hiding, hoping she’d managed vapor, holding her breath, right or wrong. Eli was manic. She wanted desperately to question him to get answers, but knew she could not. He was busily talking to himself as he took in the state of the lab. “Fuck! It was her. Dammit. I should have waited for her to show up. I knew she couldn’t stay away,” he said to no one.

Taylen bit her mashed lips between her teeth to keep from squeaking out as she watched Hasting toss her lab to pieces. She fervently prayed that the burner she’d used had cooled off quickly and did not give her away. She sent prayers of thanks to the Goddess when Eli didn’t actually get near to that side of the counter, or to touching it to know. Though moderately satisfied that her form was hidden behind the mist of the vapor, she mentally chanted her cloaking spell for good measure. Light pass through me, no one to see. Darkness consume me, empty space let there be. Her insides clenched as she watched him. With nothing to do but witness the destruction, she repeated the chant in her head over and over until the moment Eli screeched his frustration and went back out.

Taylen didn’t dare move. She wanted desperately to know where he went and what he was doing, but couldn’t force herself to flinch as much as a millimeter.
